button functioning to turn the light completely on or off without changing the current setting. Rotary dimmers are considered old fashioned by most.

How Dimmer Switches Work
Operating a dimmer switch is simple: adjust the control to vary the amount of illumination. The dimmer control essentially limits the amount of electricity received by the light fixture by increasing or decreasing voltage to the fixture.
Dimmer Switch Compatibility
Dimmer switches work properly when used with light bulbs compatible with a dimming system.
- Incandescent: Work with almost any dimmer switch on the market.
- Fluorescent: Only certain fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs are compatible with dimmer switches; check the product packaging before making a purchase. Only CFLs with dimmable ballasts are compatible with dimmers.
- Light Emitting Diode (LED): The newest option, some LEDs are compatible with dimming systems; again, check the product packaging before making a purchase. LED light bulbs that work with dimmer switches have a driver with variable voltage control. A specific type of dimmer switch may be required to transform the voltage before it flows through the dimmer to the bulb.
