Types of Under Cabinet Lighting
Under cabinet lights can be purchased from home improvement centers, specialty lighting showrooms and directly from various manufacturers’ websites. Home improvement centers tend to have a smaller selection but the lowest prices. Under cabinet light fixtures typically use one of three types of light bulbs, also called lamps: incandescent, fluorescent or LED. The type of lamp influences the performance of the fixture, including the amount of light, the color of the light, the lifespan of the lamp or fixture and, of course, its energy use.
- Strip lights come in a variety of sizes and finishes and are easily installed. Disk or “puck” lights also come in a variety of finishes and can be spaced out for installation. Linear lighting can have fixed or variable spacing; this type of lighting uses a variety of fixtures and bulbs. The general rule of thumb is to use one 12-
inch strip light fixture or three puck lights for every 4 feet of countertop. - Under cabinet fixtures with fluorescent bulbs are energy efficient, easy to find, and inexpensive. However, many don’t accurately show reds, oranges or purples, and they can change the look of countertops and work surfaces.
- Halogen and xenon bulbs provide bright light that accurately renders colors and both offer dimming capabilities. However, both use more electricity and burn hotter, with halogen being the hottest. This can post a safety risk, create additional heat and might even cause food stored in the cabinet above to soften or melt.
- Light emitting diodes (LEDs), the newest option, is the most energy efficient under cabinet lighting by far. They have a low profile housing which tends to be relatively discreet. However, LEDs produce narrow beams of light rather than wider beams which are best for task lighting. Also, LEDs tend to cost more.
